The “NatureCulture Working Group” is a multidisciplinary team focused on exploring the relationship between human culture and the natural environment. We study how societies interact with and impact ecosystems, aiming to deepen understanding and inform sustainable practices.

Our work has continued since the ISCCL first began its involvement in the ICOMOS-IUCN project of “Connecting Practice.”  The key purpose of this project was to overcome the administrative and historical divide between natural and cultural heritage under the World Heritage Convention and beyond.  The early phases of the project were advised by Committee members Fran Han (China) and Steve Brown (Australia), extending through the 4th phase in 2023 (Leitão and Brown 2023) and the publication of such guidance tools as “A Commentary on Nature-Culture Keywords” (ICOMOS 2021).

The work of the ISCCL NatureCulture Working Group continues with a very successful seminar series the Working Group has sponsored since 2019, along with work on the theory and practice of integrating natural and cultural heritage in landscape contexts.
