The following documents would be useful in determining the level of significance:
– the listing of the Hofburg (and possibly the Garten) as an Italian Monument – I see a link in Wikipedia but the link doesn’t find the Hofburg;
– if there is a designated monument site, the boundaries of that site indicated on a map;
– the boundaries of the site Hofburggarten on that same map;
– has there been a cultural landscape report completed for the site?
– On the aerial photography it appears that the site is largely vacant, so I can infer that any cultural landscape resources are archaeological and/or remnant. Reports that identify the remaining cultural landscape resources and/or their archaeological remnants would be useful.
– Please clarify the entity that currently owns the sites, and is currently responsible for management of the site.
– Forward any archaeological reports for the site.Based on the letters received to date, the Hofburggarten seems to have a strong local advocacy group. It has been identified as a valued open space in the community that has many and varied stakeholders. The site also seems to have retained its boundaries, connectivity and relationship to the Hofburg, and its spatial organization. However, more information is needed to confirm this analysis.
My assessment: Given the advocacy for the site indicated in the letters, this site seems to be of local significance. However, currently there is not enough information provided to make an assessment of national significance.
At this stage in the process, we have been asked only to confirm national or international significance.
